What types of pilot training do you offer?
At Hoffman Aviation, we offer comprehensive training programs for private pilots, commercial pilots, and Certified Flight Instructors (CFI). Whether you're starting your aviation journey or advancing your career, we have the expertise and resources to help you achieve your goals.
How do I get started with flight training?
Getting started is easy! Simply contact us to schedule a consultation. We'll discuss your aviation goals, assess your experience level, and tailor a training plan that fits your schedule and budget.
What aircraft do you use for training?
Our fleet includes a variety of aircraft, such as the versatile Cessna 172/182 for basic training and specialized models like the Piper PA-28 for specific training needs. Each aircraft is meticulously maintained to ensure safety and performance.
What is involved in a DISCOVERY flight?
A demo flight is your opportunity to experience flying firsthand. During this one-hour flight, you'll get to handle the controls under the guidance of an experienced instructor. It's a perfect introduction to aviation and a chance to see if flying is right for you.
WHICH AIRCRAFT WILL I FLY?
I partner with High Sierra Pilots, an amazing local flying for aircraft rentals. I primarily instruct using their Cessna 172, and additionally can accommodate the student with other aircraft when needed.
Aircraft includes:
• Cessna 172 (x4)
• Cessna 182 (x1)
• Cessna 150 (x1)
• Piper Cherokee (x3)
• Super Decathlon (x1)
*Depending on type, I will also teach you in your own airplane. I carry a Non-Owner CFI insurance policy for these students. Click here to learn more about joining the club.
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO FLY?
I make myself available to fly with each student three to four times per week. In my experience flying this frequently is necessary if you want to move quickly, hone your skills and save on training costs. Each lesson is a building block, and the recency of the previous lesson has a big impact on how much you learn for the next lesson.
WHAT AIRPORTS WILL WE FLY OUT OF?
High Sierra Pilots is located in Carson and Minden airports, so those are the locations where I do the bulk of my instruction. However, for clients who own their aircraft I fly out of Truckee, Reno, and Reno-Stead airports as well. Click here to learn more about joining the club.
What is a biannual Flight Review (BFR), and do I need one?
A Biannual Flight Review, required every 24 months by the FAA, ensures that pilots maintain their proficiency and knowledge. Our experienced CFIs conduct thorough reviews of your skills and knowledge to keep you current and safe in the skies.
Do you offer high mountain flight training?
Absolutely! You will be challenged with your flying skills, navigate the mountain passes and land at a variety of high elevation fields. With Corey as your instructor your limitations can be boundless. click here for more information.
Can I use my training hours towards a pilot's license?
Absolutely! All flight hours logged during your training with us count towards the requirements for obtaining your private pilot's license or other certifications. We'll guide you through the process every step of the way.
How long does it take to earn a private pilot's license?
The time it takes to earn your private pilot's license can vary based on factors like frequency of training and individual progress. On average, students complete their training in a few months, depending on their commitment and schedule.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SOLO?
Soloing an airplane is truly an experience of a lifetime, however, it takes students different lengths of time to be able to do it safely. A conservative range would be 12-20 hours of flight time with an instructor.
CAN MY HEALTH PREVENT ME FROM BECOMING A PILOT?
The short answer is yes. Only a doctor can make this determination though. Before starting your training, I recommend getting a third class medical from an Aviation Medical Examiner or AME.

What are the requirements to become a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)?
To become a CFI, you must hold a commercial pilot's license, pass the FAA written and practical exams, and demonstrate proficiency in teaching and flight instruction. Our CFI training program prepares you thoroughly for these requirements.
